In 2015, Lavazza acquired the Danish group Merrild, a leading coffee manufacturer in the retail industry in both Denmark and the Baltic region.

With the take–over came a desire to reorganise the company’s structure and image and to undertake the much–needed refurbishment of the Danish offices. So, the main intent was to draw attention to the fusion of the two conglomerates, although still granting visibility to Merrild and its respective culture.

The refurbished building has typical Northern–European features, with 1800 sqms set in extremely pleasant and quiet surroundings.

The client’s main requirement was to integrate, from the standpoint of style and image, the distinctive brand identities of Lavazza and Merrild, by combining the two philosophies without creating competition.

The renovation included new offices, the Training Center, a café and meeting rooms.

The chosen colour scheme and furniture seamlessly join the identity of the two brands: the pictures on the walls emphasise the primary product, coffee.

The flooring is in locally sourced oak, all loadbearing walls and structural columns which support the pitched roof are in exposed brick, partition walls and the iron railings of the parapet on ground and mezzanine floors are painted white. Iconic pictures, which illustrate the world of coffee–making as well as the brands Lavazza and Merrild, are put on display on every wall.

Having a healthy workplace is important to Danish culture, especially as it is seen as one of the factors which contribute to increasing levels of production. As a result, in Denmark, the lunch hour is seen as sacred, a time for conviviality and engaging in social activity: eating together is therefore a necessity, fostered by a friendly, sociable environment. The ambience is warm, pleasant and homelike.
